Juror participation essential

Both Ohio County Circuit Judge Arthur Recht and The Intelligencer deserve praise for their recent efforts emphasizing the need for increased juror participation (“Jury Duty Is An Obligation,” Sept. 9). The right to a trial by a balanced jury of your peers is the cornerstone of our legal system, and that right cannot thrive without an engaged citizenry.
West Virginia’s legal system has been the subject of much focus in recent years. As a consequence, public awareness of the important role our state courts play in our daily lives, and the need to reform certain aspects of our courts, is perhaps at an all-time high. But the significance of juror participation is often lost in that debate.
