W.Va. Legislature
West Virginians are represented by a ”citizen” or part-time Legislature in which lawmakers are elected to represent the people while still maintaining their full-time occupations.
Our state Legislature consists of two bodies – the state Senate and the House of Delegates. There are currently thirty-four state Senators and one-hundred state Delegates in the West Virginia Legislature, which are elected from 17 senatorial districts and 58 delegate districts.
The West Virginia Legislature begins its regular session on the second Wednesday in January of each year (except in years where a new Governor is inaugurated), and meets for sixty consecutive days. The Governor also has the power to convene “extraordinary” or special sessions of the Legislature.
